Hi Dr. Metler,

Yes, the lumbar supports often make things worse. Try sitting on your sitz bones and it will make a difference. Also, look for my video on pain-free sitting under the "sitting" category. This can be applied in the car as well. For teachers of the Balance Posture Method back East, try contacting Jean Couch at the Balance Center in Palo Alto. The website is www.balancecenter.com. Good luck!

Hi Jude,

That's great! Keep practicing and it will become natural. This posture is natural for all humans up until age 3, so we just need to return to it.

Take care,

Super suggestion. I could feel tension leaving as I changed my "erect posture". I had been working hard on trying to keep upright due to shoulder pain from hours at the computer. This is so logical and yet so simple. Now, I just need to do it regularly! Thanks for the healthful advice.

Thanks for the good information on restorative yoga. I have been taking a restorative yoga class for awhile and I feel so much better physically. Combined with the healthy alignment that I learned in your Balance series, my back issues are much less now. There is no better exercise, IMO, than a restorative yoga which does indeed relax and renew the body. I feel a difference when I don't do daily restorative yoga.

[...] Forward head posture is common among people who sit at desks all day. In addition to making us look like Yertle the Turtle, it’s pretty bad for just about every part of your back. Forward head posture causes headaches, neck and shoulder pain, upper back pain, and permanent curvature of the upper back. And don’t forget that it makes us look like Yertle. Pain is one thing, but vanity is eternal. [...]
