Overview

The Balance Your Body Program teaches you specific guidelines for total comfort in all your everyday movements. Upon completion of the BYB Foundations Program (15 hours), you will have learned and repeatedly practiced specific guidelines to anatomically balance the body when:

These guidelines help you to significantly reduce back and joint pain and lengthen your spine.

The BYB Basics Program (7.5 hours) teaches you the basics of sitting, standing, bending, walking, lying on the side and sitting at the computer.

In each class we will review the guidelines for Balance in your daily movements, building on, refining and enhancing your understanding and comfort. Besides specific guidelines for Balance, classes include relaxation techniques, anatomical explanations and images of people in Balance.

You will be taught how to place yourself in everyday positions. After you position yourself, I will guide you individually to maximize your Balance and comfort. You will be moving from sitting to standing to bending to lying down. You always have the option of sitting if you are tired of standing, or vice versa. Often people are surprised at how good they feel at the end of each class.

I recommend that you wear comfortable street clothes or workout clothes. Tight clothing (such as jeans or short skirts) restricts movement. Large or overly bulky clothing is not ideal either, as it makes it more difficult to see the alignment of your bones. Please bring 2 bed pillows to classes 1, 2, 3, and 4 to use when we practice reclining.

Curriculum

You will review sitting back, as taught in the introductory class. Each person will get specific, individual feedback about his or her needs for Balanced sitting. Two other sitting positions will be taught as well: how to sit forward on a chair (as you might do to work on a computer) and reclining on a chair (yes, it is possible to do this safely!). I will teach how to sit comfortably in your car, and I will place people individually in their cars to maximize comfort while driving.

You will learn about the anatomy of the pelvis and spine, and see slide shows in each class with images of people in and out of Balance (which usually inspire us to practice!). You will learn to stand and bend forward in Balance (including how to pick things up off the floor), walk and sleep in Balance. Two sleeping positions will be taught: lying on the side and on the back. Each will be taught twice to allow for questions that come up during practice. We will discuss how to sit in a variety of chairs, including couches, airplane seats and other common problem chairs.

This is practical material, meant to help you become comfortable in all your daily movements. This course will give you the tools to change painful habits into pain-free movement and postural habits, and you will begin the process of straightening your spine as well. These are tools that you can use for the rest of your life.
